Gerster Picks Up Must See Racing Fast Time At Berlin

MARNE, Mich. – Brian Gerster extended his all-time qualifying record with the Must See Racing Sprint Car Series during Saturday's Engine Pro Fast Car Dash program at the seven-sixteenths-mile oval.

Gerster raced to his 29th career Hamilton Trucking Fast Time Award with a lap of 13.209 seconds (119.237 mph) in the No. 50m RAM Engineering Midwest/Fuller Life Water Co. sprinter for Dick Myers Racing.

It marks Gerster's third-career MSR-sanctioned fast time at Berlin, and his first at the track since the special Speed Trial event in 2015, when he broke the all-time track record.

Defending Berlin winner Charlie Schultz timed in second-fastest at 13.234 seconds (119.012 mph) with the John Reiser-owned No. 9s entry, followed by Canadian Ryan Litt (13.368/117.819), who was third in the 24-car field.

Four-time Must See Racing Sprint Car Series champion Jimmy McCune and home-state driver Jason Blonde completed the top five in qualifying.

Tom Jewell, who finished a career-best second last June at Berlin, was sixth ahead of Anthony McCune, Teddy Alberts, Jerry Caryer and Kevin Feeney.

Tyler Roahrig, who planned to race the Wayne Stickney No. 99 Saturday night, participated in a pair of practice sessions early in the day but scratched for the evening after fighting a severe vibration.

Heat races at Berlin are slated to begin at 8 p.m. ET.

Berlin Up Next For Must See Sprints

HOLLY, Mich. – The Must See Racing Sprint Car Series presented by Engine Pro will resume after a weather-induced, month-long break with Saturday's stop at Berlin Raceway.

Originally scheduled to be the second of two Must See Racing appearances at Berlin this season, the Aug. 10 event will now be the first of that pair, thanks to a rainout of the series' attempt to race at the seven-sixteenths-mile oval back in early June.

In fact, Saturday's race will mark just the third race of the year for the asphalt winged 410ci sprint car series, with Jimmy McCune and Jason Blonde claiming the spoils at the first two starts of the year at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway and Birch Run (Mich.) Speedway, respectively.

Due to McCune having engine troubles at Birch Run, the championship picture has been blown wide open, with the four-time champion's nephew Anthony atop the standings by 10 over Charlie Schultz.

Anthony McCune is still looking for his first-career Must See Racing victory, however, a storyline he hopes will be a moot point following Saturday's proceedings at Berlin.

"We've been close; we just need to seal the deal and catch that last break," said the younger McCune following the most recent event at Birch Run. "We know we have the speed. Berlin is a place that has been good to us recently, and hopefully, we can turn that good fortune into a victory next time out."

In order to capture that elusive win, however, Anthony McCune will have to turn back the likes of a field that includes his uncle Jimmy; pavement ace Troy DeCaire; home-state favorite Blonde; series regulars Charlie Schultz, Ryan Litt and Adam Biltz; and Tom Jewell, who finished second at Berlin one year ago.

As of press time, 24 drivers representing seven different states will be in attendance at Berlin.

The Fast Car Dash format will be in effect for the Berlin event, with the top eight cars from qualifying participating in a fully-inverted, eight-lap heat race and a total of $900 in bonus money on the line.

In addition to the Must See Racing sprint cars, the Berlin Raceway 4-cylinders, sportsman and super stock classes will also be on the racing card for the Engine Pro Fast Car Dash.

Pit gates open at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with hot laps kicking off at 3 p.m., qualifying hitting the track at 5:15 p.m. and feature racing beginning at 6:30 p.m., following the night's opening ceremonies.

Reiser & Schultz Keeping Busy; Sandusky Welcomes MSR Sprints On Aug. 25

HOLLY, Mich. – The Must See Racing Sprint Car Series presented by Engine Pro may have been weathering a month-long break in its season schedule, but don't tell that to John Reiser and Charlie Schultz.

The duo has still been chasing trophies together in spite of MSR's weather-prompted summer hiatus.

Reiser and Schultz took down a Crate Sprint victory at Sandusky (Ohio) Speedway during the recent Hy-Miler Weekend, with Schultz driving to the win over pseudo-teammate Brenden Torok in the 20-lapper.

While it wasn't quite the same as a winged 410 sprint car win on pavement, it was still a valuable performance for driver and team, considering that the Must See Racing field will be at Sandusky on Sunday, Aug. 25 for the second round of the Border Wars Shootout.

"Any laps you can get are important; it's seat time and it keeps your skills sharp," Schultz explained. "That's why I run indoors (in go-karts) during the winter time, because it keeps your reaction times sharp, keeps your brain going and everything that it takes to be successful in racing.

"To win that Thursday night show was good and really, a statement, if you ask me," Schultz added. "I don't think that car has been defeated since they started the crate (sprint) deal two years ago. It's run four times and has four wins. We tested with the 410 cars too, and got some good baseline notes for when we go back there, so we're really happy as a team right now."

The Sandusky event is also a home race for both Schultz, who hails from Lorain, Ohio, and Reiser, whose racing operation is based in nearby Elyria, Ohio.

That means there's an added boost of hometown pride, as well as the pressure to perform well.

"Adam has a lot of laps at Sandusky in a front-wheel drive car, and he won the championship in that class there a few years ago, and Reiser has a lot of laps there in both a 305 sprint and a front-wheel drive car, so there's definitely pride to try and defend home turf," Schultz noted. "I've got probably 10,000 laps there, myself, between running supermodifieds and sprint cars.

"It's good for us, it's close to home and you get a lot of friends and family members who can't make the long drives to Indiana or Michigan who are able to come out and see us."

Schultz currently sits second in points, just 10 back of series leader Anthony McCune, and views his current position as an opportunity to strike and take control of the championship chase.

"I'm not necessarily in attack mode, but we are trying to be consistent," said Schultz. "We faltered a little bit during the opener at Anderson and we recovered at Birch Run with a top-five finish, but if the caution hadn't come out, I think we'd have been on the podium and be in an even better position than we already are.

"We have a good baseline for Berlin coming up, after winning there last year, and hope to carry some momentum from there into Sandusky in a few weeks as well."

The Border Wars Shootout kicks off at Michigan's Owosso Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 24, before moving to Sandusky for a Sunday afternoon matinee special – the first time that Must See Racing has invaded the lightning-fast half-mile oval for a series event.

Pit gates at Sandusky will open at 10 a.m. on Aug. 25, with hot laps kicking off at 2 p.m., qualifying beginning at 4 p.m. and racing starting promptly at 5 p.m.

The Midwest Compact Touring Series will join the Must See Racing sprint cars on the event card.
