WINGED SPRINT CARS RETURN TO INDY SPEEDROME AFTER 21 YEAR ABSENCE
May 3, 2021 – Winged sprint cars are set to return to the Indianapolis Speedrome this weekend for the first time since 2000. It will be only the second time in the history of the iconic Indianapolis southeast side 1/5-mile oval that sprint cars have competed.
The Must See Racing Sprint Series presented by Engine Pro will headline two consecutive nights of racing this weekend June 4-5 as part of the inaugural “Indyana Shutout”. The Saturday night finale will be highlighted by a 100-lap feature event.
The last time winged sprint cars competed at the Indianapolis Speedrome was August 11, 2000. Gary Fedewa won the 100-lap feature over Rick Holley and Mike Ling. It was an entertaining affair that saw Fedewa come from the eighth starting position to claim the win with a late race pass of Holley.
Current Indianapolis Speedrome Late Model points leader and 2019 World Figure 8 champion Eddie VanMeter announced on Tuesday afternoon that he will compete in this event. It will be VanMeter’s first foray in a sprint car. He will be aboard the Mike Blake owned orange #81 Dynamite chassis.
Most of the Must See Racing regulars are expected to compete including last weekend’s American Speed U.S. Nationals winner Jimmy McCune. Early 2021 MSR feature winner Joe Liguori will also be in competition and has announced he will be pulling double-duty. Liguori will also compete in a school bus figure 8.
Former drivers who competed in that long ago 2000 event are also expected to compete including Jeff Bloom and Holley.
Besides the 100-lap finale on Saturday night, the “Rumble for the Record” presented by EDCO Welding will also be on tap. Winged sprint cars and winged late models will go head-to-head in a speed trials qualifying format to break the track record. Bragging rights and a $5,000 payday will be on the line as to which car is ultimately the fastest type of car to grace the Indianapolis Speedrome asphalt.
The weekends activities will also include Street Stocks, Junior Fast Karts, Champ Karts, and USS Kenyon Midgets. For those unable to attend the race will be streamed on www.Speedrome.tv.
